Multicast provides an excellent solution for allowing a particular group of the partners to participate in a multimedia transmission, such as videoconference and program distribution. This thesis addresses on the wireless ATM multicasting issue, two schemes are proposed to provide many-to-many multicast services. The first proposal is a round robin root devolution protocol. This protocol is based on a many-to-many multicast protocol that has only one sender on a connect tree. The dynamic membership management scheme makes the identity of sender can be replaced accordingly.
The second approach provides a lower level design with the leaky bucket congestion control on the ATM switch. Firstly, a multi-delivering multipoint-to-multipoint virtual channel connection, a connection tree is constructed to connect the members of a multicast group in wireless ATM network. This connection tree allows individual members to deliver multimedia traffic at the same time. Furthermore, in congestion control, two leaky bucket based algorithms are proposed in user level and network level. At user level, a traffic-shaping algorithm is adopted. The output cells stream of traffic-shaping algorithm is enforced to conform to the traffic contract. For the network level, a two-level leaky bucket algorithm is proposed to perform conformance checking and traffic shaping. Under these controls, the cells of the members are interlaced on the connection tree and flow from sources to destinations. After the cells are received by the destinations, the re-assembly of AAL layer’s protocol data unit (PDU) is performed.
This thesis is organized as five chapters. Chapter 1 and chapter 2 are the introductions of wireless ATM and multicast, respectively. The proposed algorithms are depicted in chapter 3. Chapter 4 covers the analysis and simulation results. Finally, a conclusion is made in chapter 5.
