由於資訊科技的進步及網際網路的發展,使用者面臨資訊過量的問題,再加上資訊的動態性、異質性及分散的本質,造成使用者難以搜尋及檢索到所需的資訊,於是單純的搜尋引擎轉變成入口網站(Portal Site),提供單一入口的整合式服務來幫助節省時間與精力;同樣企業利用資訊科技及網際網路等技術,經過不同階段的學習及應用,帶來多樣化的應用系統平台,使用者必需連結不同的應用系統,才能取得所需資訊,而過度膨脹的資訊及多樣的系統平台,使存取資訊時須透過許多不同的系統介面或是需瞭解不同語言及格式等,而使用者必須藉由不同機制才得以組合拼湊出所需要的資訊;企業若能有效整合資訊轉換為企業的資產,將使企業能在競爭激烈的市場之中獲利,因此過量的資訊對企業是危機也是轉機,單看企業如何因應。
企業資訊入口網站(Enterprise Information Portal)是近期企業電子化演進的一個重要階段,透過網際網路相關技術將相關企業資訊資源彙整到一個整合的入口,讓使用者只需透過單一的入口,就可以獲得整合性的資訊資源;因此,順應企業電子化的整合趨勢,建置企業資訊入口網站,來整合企業資訊資源,藉以增進企業運作效能與競爭力,將成為企業重要議題。
兩層式主從架構在使用人數不多及系統應用十分單純時,仍不失為良好的資訊架構,但隨著使用者人數日益增加或系統應用範圍漸漸增多或變廣,則兩層式主從架構的系統維護工作,就成為資訊部門沈重的負擔,利用企業資訊入口網站來整合現有兩層式主從架構系統及企業內外其他各種不同的資訊資源,使資訊架構成為更有效率與效用的應用系統。
