The Electronic Commerce information systems provide the solutions for the Business to Business (B2B) data exchange or transmission in Supply Chain Management (SCM). The most general implementation is the introduction of inter-organizational systems (IOS), the subject of this study. While prior studies of the IOS in SCM have examined the benefits of network leaders from these systems, little attention has been paid to the benefits to suppliers that mostly are introducing the systems upon the request from their customers. This study replicates the research model of Gattiker and Goodhue (2005) in the context of post-implementation of IOS, examines the benefits of IOS to suppliers firms based on the organizational information processing theory (OIPT). The targets of this study are the vendors that have implemented IOSs in the supply chains of Taiwan’s IT and Electronic industries. For example, vendors that have participated B-Plan, D-Plan, and StarBex-Project (Star-Business Exchange Project) include logistics service providers, component suppliers, finished good suppliers, and own-branding suppliers.
Accordingly we propose that the overall benefits to the vendors can be achieved through the intermediate benefits of coordination improvements and efficiency enhancements. We also examine six antecedents that might affect the intermediate benefits and overall benefits, including interdependence, uniqueness, time elapsed since implementation, IOS type, connection mode, and data quality. Results show that the empirical data supports hypotheses of interdependence, uniqueness, time elapsed since implementation, and data quality. The vendors also responded with their comments and suggestions towards the IOS, such as the information sharing should include inventory management, order management, demand forecast, payment detail, production plan, logistics, and so on, with which customers or buyers can improve their IOSs.
