「模具業」被稱為機械工業之母,為大量生產與標準化的產品工具,具有快速生產、品質精良與生產價格低廉之特性。模具在全球化市場激烈的競爭中,扮演著重要的角色,隨著產品生命週期縮短,所有開發專案必須在有限的時間內,完成產品開發手續,因此間接影響到模具業必須配合顧客的要求,從顧客工業造形設計的構想發展、機構設計的實體建立、最初模型建立、產品試裝與最後的開模檢討,皆要靠模具開發的提早溝通與參與,才能縮短開發時間與降低不確定因素的風險,進而提高產品開發的成功率。就模具廠而言,模具是一項精密技術的產品,相對於顧客,模具是大量、快速生產產品的生產工具。任何一家企業必須仰賴不斷的提供新產品的設計,才能滿足市場需求,不斷創新的結果,模具製作技術相對的也提昇,其精確度、信賴度將會間接影響零件的相互搭配性,進而影響到完成品的品質,因此從模具技術高低可以看出一個國家工業技術水準的程度。
研究實證結果顯示,模具業參與產品協同設計程度不同,對於模具開發績效有顯著影響;以模具類別而言,塑膠模具與沖壓模具參與品協同設計程度愈高,愈能提高模具開發績效;以技術創新而言,在塑膠模具屬於技術創新程度高或技術創新程度低,對於參與協同設計程度愈高,愈能提高模具開發績效;另外在沖壓模具,屬於技術創新程度高,對於參與協同設計程度愈高,愈能提高模具開發績效。
