During the last ten years or so beauty has become an important research issue for economists. Economists, especially labor economists are interested in this topic because they want to find out whether beauty is able to bring forth positive economic effect on the labor market. This topic is an important issue for scholars and practitioners in human resource management as well because they want to know whether beauty could bring better performance and greater economic achievement for the individual worker. Furthermore, it is important for an individual worker to be aware that their appearance is able to influence his performance and salary by choosing different types of jobs.
Although there are plenty of literature on this topic, but none is on the effect of beauty on an individual worker via his choice of types of jobs. Therefore, in this study we investigate the mediation effect of job choice on the relationship between beauty and salary. In this study we pick the securities company C and their regular sales employees as the objects of our study. In company C there are two types of sales persons, one group of employees deals with customers personally and directly, the other group deals with customers indirectly via telephone calls. By randomly selecting 346 sales persons in this company we have the following findings: (1) Beauty has a positive influence on job choices. (2) Job choice has a positive effect on salary. (3) Beauty has a positive influence on salary. (4) Job choices have partial mediation effect on the relationship between beauty and salary.
