Recent advances in product development are now rapidly migrating from local, cross-functional collaboration to a mode of global collaboration. Among many approaches to product development, Global Product Development (GPD) and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) are most prevailing in both industry and academia. Through GPD, different processes or components of the product are developed in dispersed parts of the world, while PLM is the process of managing the entire lifecycle of a product from its conception, through design and manufacture, to service and disposal.
In this thesis, we firstly study how a PLM system will operate in the setting of GPD. Secondly, we are interested in the realization of an efficient process of GDP and the reduction of its cycle-time. For this purpose, we adopt Design Structure Matrix (DSM) to streamline the GPD process based on the flows of information between different interdependent activities. Based on the DSM models, we then create the process templates by applying Design Roadmap (DR) technique to capture the dependencies between tasks and features.
