The VUV-induced photodesorption of CO has been widely studied over the past few decades. Fayolle et al. (2011) demonstrated that the photodesorption of CO depends on its vibronic and electronic transition strengths, implying that the desorption is induced by the electronic transition (DIET). Furthermore, through a double-layered ice (N2/13CO) experiment, Bertin et al. (2013) suggested that this mechanism is indirect, allowing energy transfer between two different molecules with non-coinciding electronic transition states. In this study, pure 13CO ice and 13CO ice deposited on top of Ar, CH4, or CH3OH ice are irradiated by tunable, monochromatic synchrotron radiation. Through the discrepancy in the VUV-absorption cross section among these molecules, we aim to investigate the mechanism of the energy transfer between different molecules. However, we find that two factors affect the photodesorption yield of top-layered 13CO ice: the effective surface area and chemical reaction at the ice layer interface. Additionally, through experiments with different column densities of pure 13CO ice, we can determine the energy transfer length for each electronic transition.
