With the recent advancement in information technology, school teachers now can use information-technology based teaching tools to inspire students’ in participating learning activities. The purpose of this research is to investigate the effectiveness of learning by using a management simulation system designed for the purpose of improving the knowledge, skills and the attitude of hotel managers.
The simulation system was developed by a team of students under the instruction of professors Hann-Tarn Jeng and Shi-Jen Lin of National Central University. The system was designed based on the concept of “experience learning” and “digital game-based learning.” In order to test the learning effectiveness of the simulation system, the hotel management simulation was conducted in a four weeks series of management-related classes. The students were divided into groups and act as the managers of a commercial hotel. Each group represented a management team running a hotel in a market of 7 competitors.
After the course, we carried out a questionnaire survey of the simulation system on students; then collected and analyzed the qualitative and quantitative data. The result of the data analysis showed that the simulation system can help learners enhance their management knowledge of service industry, the capability of decision-making and strategy execution, and the teamwork experience. However, the system has some shortcomings in system programming and some system functions (ex: restaurant, expanding strategy...etc.). Based on the conclusions and discussions, this research pointed out some directions for further study to be conducted.
