The realities of today''s digital economy are requiring and enabling dramatically improved levels of supply chain efficiency and effectiveness. The Business-to-Business (B2B) or extended supply chain (ESC), enabled by Internet technologies, is specifically being offered as the next competitive weapon. As the ESC construct extends outward beyond the boundaries of individual companies through the use of digital technologies and integrating practices, the most important issue is about “information sharing” among the members of the chain.
Due to the advancement of information technology, it is foreseeable that information hub (i-Hub) will prevail in the extended supply chain performing the tasks of collaborative planning, monitoring, and control the supply chain operations. Since gaps may occur between planning and execution which need to be prudently monitored and controlled, an alert system embedded in i-Hub will provide this mechanism in real time.
A well-known engineering method - Multilevel Flow Model (MFM) is effective in controlling complex systems, such as nuclear power plant or cooling systems, to test the system safety and reliability. In this research, we apply MFM to design an alert system for i-Hub in monitoring the performance of ESC when unpredicted events occur. In addition, the emerging industrial standard Supply Chain Operation Reference (SCOR) Model is adopted to represent ESC activities. To demonstrate the proposed methodology, a case study is presented.
